Supporting DNV, the global independent energy expert and assurance provider (www.dnv.com), Technica has completed specialist design work as part of a Hydrogen De-blending project.

Known as HyNTS De-blending, DNV is supporting National Gas Transmission (NGT) in developing a hydrogen de-blending, purification, and re-fuelling facility at DNV’s Spadeadam Research and Test Facility located in the North of England. Technica has provided design and engineering support to develop the control system and associated field infrastructure to operate the Hydrogen de-blending unit and compressor.  With much of the technology being ‘new to market’, the Technica engineers have had to overcome complex challenges to deliver a successful project for DNV and the end user.

Having completed major installation and commissioning works on two sites in the Southern area of the SGN network, Technica has now been chosen to support a large-scale project on a key part of the Scotland network, a first for the Grimsby based business.

The project is set to be delivered through Summer and into Autumn this year and will see Technica acting as the Principal Designer and Principal Contractor to complete the design, system integration, installation and commissioning of a complete electrical, control and instrumentation, metering, gas analysis overhaul of the site.

Engineering solutions provider Technica is launching a new company to elevate its expertise in the energy industry, with eyes on the emergence of hydrogen and carbon capture economies.

Technica Measurement will bring the well-established firm’s specialised capability in fiscal metering and flow measurement of liquids and gases to the fore. The experience provided is vital in ensuring accurate understanding of product volumes in storage, terminals and pipelines, critical for the high value transactions involved in exploration, extraction, transportation and generation.

With a re-energised roll-out of highly efficient gas power stations, the development of hydrogen production and carbon capture and storage and ongoing requirements of the traditional hydrocarbons sector, it is seen as timely introduction.

Maintenance, operation, verification and consultation will be key strands, with the process not only crucial in custody transfer of the commodity, but a vital tool in analysing terminal and plant performance.

It has been a core discipline of the Humber Estuary-based business, launched by John Davison 21 years ago. Technica had already been providing measurement support services to the likes of CESL+ and Gassco. The knowledge and leading position in the key regulatory and commercial process is now being highlighted under the Technica Measurement brand, with accuracy, excellence and integrity at the core.

Acclaimed engineer Marc Baynham, together with Steve Stocks – who has just been welcomed to the Grimsby-headquartered company – take on leading roles in the new venture, providing a platform to capitalise on the knowledge base, while ensuring the independent, personable business approach remains.

Mr Baynham, technical director and a recognised independent gas expert by the Joint Office of Gas Transporters, has had several papers on the process published, advising government and industry bodies on best practice. He has successfully overseen the development of the measurement capability within Technica for the past three years.

Mr Stocks, operations director, brings 25 years of experience, joining from a FTSE-250 entity with a background in oil, gas, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. He has a proven track record in the management of measurement system contracts for onshore and offshore assets and pipelines. He is a member of the Energy Institute and an active participant in hydrocarbon management committees, taking a keen interest in fiscal, allocation and environmental measurement systems to ensure energy security and transition.

Richard Law, business development director at Technica, becomes managing director of the new entity. He aims to build a team of 10, alongside the existing 60-strong team at Technica.

Technica has secured a key contract to assist SGN in the upgrading of their Operational Technology (OT) assets across many sites in both Scotland and the south of England.

The contract win follows a lengthy and technically demanding competitive tendering process which commenced in 2023.  The process allowed Technica to demonstrate its credentials in relation to OT and cyber and included a presentation of capability and project delivery to the SGN procurement and technical assessors.

The project, which has already commenced, involves undertaking surveys across over 40 sites around the UK, production of site-specific design packages, configuration of new OT assets and then deployment of this new equipment on site.

Only one month after a similar contract award from SGN, Technica has been selected to provide specialist Electrical, Control and Instrumentation (EC&I) installation services in the South-Eastern section of the SGN network.

Working alongside the civils and mechanically biased main works contractor who are undertaking a major upgrade of this critical site, Technica will oversee the installation and commissioning of all EC&I elements of the project including switchgear, fuel gas metering skids, boiler house and heat exchangers, telemetry, pressure regulation and site lighting.

Whilst not as complex as the works being undertaken elsewhere for SGN, this contract is of significant importance to SGN considering the strategic geographical location within their network and the requirement to complete the wider project works within the summer period.
