TECHNICA INSTALLS FIRST WIND TURBINE AT GRIMSBY HEADQUARTERS 150 150 Technica Ltd

TECHNICA INSTALLS FIRST WIND TURBINE AT GRIMSBY HEADQUARTERS

Technica is pleased to announce that it has successfully completed the installation of the first vertical axis wind turbine of its type in the UK.  Working with installation partners Abacus Lighting (www.abacuslighting.com) the installation has brought an end to the first phase of this exciting new development project.

The EOW-200 turbine was purchased from our Florida based turbine partner Be-Wind (www.be-wind.com) and following receipt of planning permission from North East Lincolnshire Council, the installation will serve multiple purposes as Technica look to increase their green credentials.

Firstly, following the signing of a distribution agreement with Be-Wind, the turbine was used as a technology demonstrator for potential customers and other parties interested in renewable energy within the UK.  Secondly, Technica aim to undertake further research and development regarding how the power generated from the turbine can be harnessed in the most efficient way, now with the benefit of real life data and finally, the turbine will be connected to an existing array of solar panels installed at Technica ensuring that the power generated by the turbine will further reduce Technica’s carbon foot-print and demonstrating the utility of combined wind / solar production.

Managing Director of Technica, Richard Law commented “I am delighted that we have finally been able to install the turbine at our Headquarters in Grimsby which is rapidly becoming the wind capital of the UK and we look forward to being able to undertake further research into this novel technology”.  Richard continued “As the UK looks to de-carbonise, we believe that the ability to combine technologies such as this turbine, into local micro-grid energy solutions can make a significant contribution to the UK energy needs”.

Technica has already been working with Chris Bingham, Professor of Energy Conversion at the University of Lincoln (www.lincoln.ac.uk) and will continue to explore opportunities for the use of this technology within the residential and small-scale industrial sectors.

The novel design of the turbine means that it has a much wider generating window than traditional turbines and the small footprint and lightweight structure makes the turbine ideal for installation in either an urban environment or on top of high-rise buildings or masts.

Technica wishes to extend thanks to Abacus for their support during the installation and to our neighbours at Great Coates Motors (www.greatcoatesmotors.com ) for allowing us to access their land during the installation.  We would like to add further recognition to Gina Waterhouse and Humber and Lincolnshire LEP for their assistance.

TECHNICA ANNOUNCES COLLABORATION WITH UNIVERSITY OF LINCOLN

Technica Energy, the sustainable energy sector of Technica, are pleased to announce the signing of a collaboration agreement with the University of Lincoln.

The agreement couples together Technica and Professor Chris Bingham, Professor of Energy Conversion at the University. Chris will act as a technical advisor on power systems and control issues related to the design and realisation of micro-grid systems using the Be-Wind vertical axis wind turbine. Working alongside Technica, Chris will ensure that Technica can harness the maximum amount of power produced by the turbines when they are linked together to form a private micro-grid system.

The work will be funded by the Productivity Programme (https://productivityprogramme.co.uk/), a scheme funded by the European Regional Development Fund and run by the university of Lincoln. The scheme provides access to academic expertise at the University and is designed to enable Greater Lincolnshire SMEs to advance and develop their ambitions – driving levels of productivity and investment as well as collaborative engagement, leading to new products, processes and services and creating and exploiting new markets.

Speaking of the collaboration, Managing Director of Technica, John Davison stated “I am delighted with the opportunity to collaborate with our local University and particularly someone of the calibre of Professor Bingham”. Continuing, John added “Partnerships such as this can only benefit local industry and further enhance the already excellent reputation of the University of Lincoln”.

Professor Bingham (https://staff.lincoln.ac.uk/cbingham) has been the Professor of Energy Conversion at the University of Lincoln since 2010, where he was also the first senior appointment and co-founder of the newly formed School of Engineering.

Industrial collaboration and commercial exploitation features strongly in Prof Bingham’s research profile and interests. Selected contributions of his research portfolio that have resulted in commercial market penetration include the development of sensorless hydraulic-electric pump power steering systems for the automotive industry (supported by TRW Conekt, Solihull, UK); designing and prototyping of electrohydrostatic and electromechanical actuation systems for a passenger aircraft (supported by Goodrich Actuation Systems, Fordhouses, Wolverhampton, UK); the development of modular induction heating systems (supported by Inductalec, Sheffield, UK); and the development and realization of real-time prognostic and diagnostic algorithms that monitor a global fleet of industrial gas turbines (supported by Siemens, Lincoln, UK).

As further evidence of the international dimension to Dr. Bingham’s reach and significance in energy and systems sectors, he was selected as a British Council representative in Qatar to promote UK-Qatar collaborative research initiatives for energy security in the region (2011). He has also acted as an international reviewer for the Qatar National Research Fund.

Prof. Bingham is currently an active member of the Editorial Board of ‘Energies’—an open access journal of scientific research technology and development in the Energy Sector and has acted as guest Editor of Special Issues.

TECHNICA COMPLETES PROCUREMENT AND BUILD PHASE OF EPC PROJECT

The delivery of three equipment kiosks during torrential rainfall signified the end of the procurement and build phase of an EPC contract which Technica is delivering for an independent energy client.

The project has seen Technica complete conceptual designs, FEED, detailed design and now procurement and build of equipment which will allow the client to fulfil their exit agreement from the national transmission system at 75bar.

The equipment, built by Technica at our Grimsby HQ included a bespoke telemetry system, intelligent heat recovery control system and both custody transfer and allocation metering systems, E&I control room, Gas Chromatograph kiosk utilising the Emerson 370XA analyser and electrical intake kiosk.

In line with our Covid-19 Secure procedures, the equipment was virtually tested last week and will now be installed by our technicians on completion of the civils and mechanical installation which our construction partners commenced around 6 weeks ago.

Installation and commissioning activities are due to commence later this month and will include the installation and testing of the kiosks, end to end communications testing with the client and the network operator, ME2 validation of both metering systems and SICK 600XT ultra-sonic meters and an ISO10723 performance evaluation of the analysis package as well as the mechanical commissioning of pressure reduction and heat recovery skids.
